In the early 1970s, Shapiro made a group of small sculptures recalling recognizable objects such as chairs, houses, and shelves. Often placed directly on the floor, as is the case with Untitled, such works stimulate feelings of both confusion and familiarity: their scale and placement make it difficult to ascertain our relation to them. Untitled, for example, suggests both a structure without a roof as well as the footprint of a building seen from above.
