The Haas Brothers, fraternal twins who launched a collaborative practice in 2010, create playful environments populated with fantastical flora and fauna. Imbued with curiosity, humor, and passion for nature, their furniture, objects, and, most recently, large-scale sculptural installations awaken our imaginations and transport us to another fertile, fanciful, and futuristic world. 

Haas Brothers: Moonlight is presented across three spaces inside and outside the Nasher Sculpture Center, with whimsical and powerful installations that highlight the artists’ distinctive fusion of art, design, and technology. In front of the museum, two Moon Towers—inspired by the iconic streetlamps the brothers remember from their childhood in Austin, Texas—greet visitors from the sidewalk. The tall, glowing sculptures function as streetlamps, recalling both the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí’s organic architecture and the French designer Hector Guimard’s sinuous art nouveau forms.  

The Moon Towers create a visual connection to a majestic cast-bronze tree in the Nasher’s Public Gallery, visible inside and from the street-facing window. With a cast-bronze patinated trunk and hand-beaded leaves and limbs laden with illuminated blown glass strawberries, The Strawberry Tree (2023) evokes a moonlit garden. Visitors are invited to enjoy this serene garden of far-from-earthly delights. 

In the sculpture garden, an eight-foot-tall Emergent Zoid from one of the artists’ newest bodies of work will join sculptures from the Nasher’s permanent collection. The Emergent Zoids are a series of curvaceous sculptures made through an ingenious combination of computation and craft. Using 3D computer graphics software, the Haas Brothers created simulated shapes reminiscent of one of their favorite childhood toys, the Wooden Wiggly Snake, and choreographed their movements digitally. The brothers call the shapes Zoids, in homage to Dr. Zoidberg, a central character in Matt Groening’s animated television series “Futurama.” Computer simulations will be shown in the Entrance Gallery, showing the biomorphic shapes writhe, wriggle, undulate, and intertwine, in infinite permutations of the initial form.

Haas Brothers: Moonlight (Hermanos Haas: Luz de luna) se presenta en tres espacios dentro y fuera del Nasher Sculpture Center, con instalaciones caprichosas e impactantes que ponen de relieve la peculiar fusión de arte, diseño y tecnología de los artistas. Frente al museo, dos torres lunares -inspiradas en las icónicas farolas que los hermanos recuerdan de su infancia en Austin, Texas- saludan a los visitantes desde la acera. Estas esculturas altas y brillantes funcionan como farolas, recordando tanto la arquitectura orgánica del arquitecto español Antoni Gaudí como las sinuosas formas art nouveau del diseñador francés Hector Guimard.

Las Moon Towers (Torres lunares) crean una conexión visual con un majestuoso árbol de bronce fundido en la Galería Pública del Nasher, visible en el interior y desde la ventana que da a la calle. Con un tronco de bronce patinado y hojas y ramas decoradas a mano con fresas de vidrio soplado iluminadas, The Strawberry Tree (2023) (El arbol de fresas) evoca un jardín iluminado por la luna. Invitamos a los visitantes a disfrutar de este sereno jardín de delicias sobrenaturales. 

En el jardín de esculturas, un Emergent Zoid (Zoide Emergente) de dos metros de altura, perteneciente a una de las últimas obras de los artistas, se unirá a las esculturas de la colección permanente del Nasher. Los Zoides Emergentes son una serie de esculturas curvilíneas realizadas mediante una ingeniosa combinación de cálculo y artesanía. Utilizando software de gráficos por computadora en 3D, los hermanos Haas crearon formas simuladas que recuerdan a uno de sus juguetes favoritos de la infancia, la serpiente Wiggly de madera, y coreografiaron sus movimientos digitalmente. Los hermanos llaman a las formas Zoides, en homenaje al Dr. Zoidberg, personaje central de la serie de televisión animada de Matt Groening Futurama. En la galería de entrada se mostrarán simulaciones por ordenador de las formas biomórficas retorciéndose, ondulándose y entrelazándose en infinitas permutaciones de la forma inicial.
