Nasher Sculpture Center Presents Ernesto Neto Cuddle on the Tightrope

The Nasher Sculpture Center has invited internationally-renowned Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto to create a new work for one of the large, Renzo Piano-designed galleries at the Nasher Sculpture Center.  Ernesto Neto Cuddle on the Tightrope will be on view May 12 through September 9, 2012.

“Over the past two decades, Ernesto Neto has established an international reputation for his sensual and engaging environments. Cuddle on the Tightrope, a new work developed expressly for the Nasher Sculpture Center, will occupy the light-filled space of the Nasher’s upstairs gallery, creating a uniquely powerful and evocative experience,” notes Nasher Director Jeremy Strick.

Often working on the scale of architecture, Neto creates experiential environments that dramatically alter our surroundings, engage the senses, and invite interaction. The work proposed for the exhibition at the Nasher Sculpture Center continues Neto’s exploration of elevated environments and crochet, adding a new element of metal structural supports.  His grandmother and great aunt taught him to crochet in 1994, but he did not put the skill to use in his art again until many years later.

Neto now relies on a team of assistants to produce the enormous crocheted installations of recent years.  This material has allowed visitors to his environments to escape the floor of the gallery and ascend with the installation.  In O Bicho SusPenso na PaisaGen, a work made last year for display at the Faena Art Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, passageways of crocheted rope suspended from the ceiling transport visitors up into the space above the gallery floor, changing their perspective and relation to gravity, and nestling them in an aerie of polypropylene balls. With similar components, Neto will provide visitors a novel experience of the elegant, luminous galleries at the Nasher Sculpture Center.

In addition to creating a new work for exhibition at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Neto will also curate a selection of objects from the Raymond and Patsy Nasher Collection in the adjacent gallery.  The installation will also feature photographs of the objects taken by Neto, highlighting aspects of the artist’s eye in the selection.
