About Afro Mingei
The 2018 Nasher Prize Laureate Theaster Gates’s project merges Japanese and African American culture with food, drink, ceramics, and music.
Afro Mingei at the Nasher Sculpture Center is a convivial gathering space exploring the intersection of Japanese and African American philosophy, aesthetic modes and cultural classifications. Staged in the center’s front, corner gallery, the project invites people to experience this cultural binary through food, drink, music, ceramic wares, and other works of art by Theaster Gates.
About Chef Nat
Nat Assavaboonsathien is the Senior Chef Manager of Wolfgang Puck Dallas. B and raised in Bangkok, Thailand to a family of Chinese immigrants, Chef Nat is influenced by family-style meals and summer travels to different cities like Hong Kong. She fell in love with food and its ability to bring people and cultures together and after graduating from university in Bangkok, she moved to the US and enrolled in culinary school. Nat’s culinary career began in Atlanta with Wolfgang Puck before transferring to Dallas. During her time in the US, Nat has met, traveled with, and worked alongside some of the best chefs in the country.
For Afro Mingei, Nat drew from her travels throughout Asia and her time in the American South to create a menu that blends the subtle craft and invention of Japanese cuisine with the comfort, soul, and vibrancy of Southern flavors.
About Daniel Pautsch
Daniel Pautsch is Wolfgang Puck’s Bar Captain in Dallas. Originally from Chicago, but raised behind bar counters throughout Texas, Daniel has worked with some of the best bar owners and bartenders in the city, orchestrating menus all over Dallas. He started in the fast-paced bars of Sixth Street in Austin before moving to music venues, and eventually into the craft cocktail scene. Daniel’s work for Wolfgang Puck follows years of honing his skills as a mixologist, experimenting with cocktail classics and new inventions.
